Introduction:
What is a hero? What qualities do people posess that make others consider them a hero? How do the traits of the famous heroes from myths and legends compare to the character traits of present day heroes? Use the hero graphic organizer below to organize your thoughts.
Task:
We will be exploring some of the famous heroes of Greek mythology and other popular legends and discovering what they did that made them heroes. After we discover what these characteristics are your group will be campaigning for one of these heroes as the next hero to be inducted into the HERO HALL OF FAME. Finally, we will take the characteristics of these Greek Mythology heroes and see what traits carry over in to present day heroes.
Process:
Day 1 & 2

*You will meet with your group and number off 1-3.
*You will partner up with another person who has your same number and research the links provided below as well as use the books found in the literacy center. When you and your partner are done return to your orignal group and share the information you found.
*Use the CHARACTERISTICS CHART to record characteristics of Myths and Legends that you discover from reading the articles found on each of the links. Also, look for the role that heroes play in theses types of stories.
Becoming more familiar with the framework of Myths and Legends will help us understand the lives of the heroes we will be researching.

MYTHS & LEGENDS -
The power point below discusses the characterisitcs of Myths and Legends and the archetypes that are found in most of the stories. After we review the power point you will be reading a variety of Myths and Legends using links below and the variety of literature found in the literacy center. Use the characteristics you found from your research (days 1 & 2) and from the power point to fill in the graphic organizer to record the characteristics you see in the stories then decide if you would define it as a myth or legend and list the archetypes that are found in the story.

To wrap up our thoughts each group member will answer the assigned BLOG QUESTIONS and also RESPOND to at least one classmate's post. Go to our Class blog and answer these questions and share your thoughts.
Are heroes of myths, legends, and folk tales held to the same standard as those we classify as heroes in present day?
In the stories that we read many of the Greek heroes killed someone. How can a person who has committed murder become a hero?
Is killing someone who is bad heroic?
Do heroes have to be moral role models?
Remember to use good blog etiquette. Make sure your comments are thoughtful and pertaining to the question. Avoid using simple responses like "I agree" or "Me too" unless you back those statements up with an explanation like "I agree because....."
