Literary Elements

Literary Elements are important parts  of a  story.

List of Literary Elements

Fiction Story Map

Picture

Picture
The story map is a great way to lay out a story and identify many of the important literary elements (story parts).  Stories follow this pattern.  There are many graphics that can show these main literary elements. You need to be familiar with the different ways but find one that works for you!

Exposition - This is the beginning of the story where we find out the character, setting and conflict (problem)

Rising action - The conflict or problem in the story begins to get worse and not matter how characters try to solve the conflict, it gets worse.

Climax - The problem is at its worse and seems like it can NOT be solved

Falling Action -  There begins to be "light at the end of the tunnel" and the problem begins to be solved, or is solved and events in the story come to an end

Resolution -  How the problem is solved, figured out, made better.

Use your good GROUP WORK BEHAVIORS!
Read the literature selection that your small group was assigned. As you read, your group should decide what you think it would look on a story map.
Remember:
1.  Identify the exposition first (character, setting, problem)
2.  As you read the rest of the story identify HOW the problem was solved.
3. Then identify the climax
4. Then ask yourself... What three main events led up to the climax?
5.  Then ask yourself....What events happened after the climax that led to the resolution?

Little Red
3 little pigs
Jack & the Beanstalk
sleeping Beauty
