WRITING PROCESS

Each time we write we should use the writing process. This process will help us write more effectively.
Brainstorming -  Thinking of all of the things you could write about and then narrowing it down to one

Prewrite - Planning what you are going to write about.
FOCUS on WHAT you will put in your writing.

Rough Draft - Use your pre-write to guide you to compose the first
    draft of the essay/writing piece.

FOCUS on HOW you will write your thoughts.

Revise/Edit - Look for errors and ways to make your writing better. Using the scoring guide go over the rough draft to make sure it is written to meet the requirements; Look at both composing (how it is put together) and written expression (how it sounds)

Publish - Creating a final draft, making corrections that you made
    on the rough draft.

Scoring Guide/Rubric- Use the scoring guide  before, during and after to see how your writing will be assessed/scored.  It is usually have a scale of 1-4.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's practice....

PREWRITE

With your shoulder partner look at each PREWRITE . Using your criteria discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each prewrite.

CRITERIA
Prewrite #1
Prewrite #2
Picture
Compare these two prewrites.  Are they both equally effective?  Is one better than the other? Share with your shoulder partner and be ready to share out to the class.

How does your PREWRITE compare?

Now that you've written your pre-write, use the same criteria to look at it.  Make any changes that you feel necessary.  When you are done evaluating your prewrite print it and turn it in.

Rough Draft

Picture
We will use PREWRITE #2 and examine two rough drafts that were written from that prewrite.
With your shoulder partner:
1. Compare and Contrast the two rough drafts. You may make notes directly on the sample rough drafts.

2. Use the Scoring guide to score each of the rough drafts.

3. Be prepared to discuss your findings with the rest of the class.

ROUGH DRAFT #2

4. Create YOUR rough draft.
As you write YOUR rough Draft be sure and use the SCORING GUIDE.  Also make sure that you properly save your rough draft as you work on it so that you can easily reopen the file to continue creating your rough draft and you will be able to easily make changes during the revision and editing step.

REVISE & EDIT

1. Use your RUBRIC SCORING GUIDE to evalutate your writing.
2. CONVENTIONS -- FOCUS on FOUR - Use the 4 areas we chose to narrow your editing focus.
3. Two PEER EDITS - have two students edit your essay using the scoring guide. Have them initial that they have edited your paper.
4. One Self Edit - After you have had two peer edit take one more look at your paper and make any necessary changes.

PUBLISH

Finally it is time to PUBLISH! Take a look at your essay before you officially publish it to make sure it follows the scoring guide and is as error free as possible.  Essays should be turned in with the proper heading (Name and Date) written in the header of the document. They should also be double spaced. The font style you use should be a serious looking font, size 10-12 pt., and black.

Here are two great examples of student sample essays that follow the correct writing process.
What do you see in their essays that make them exemplary?
